Every time you think about a Beach Boys song or a Frankie & Annette movie, this is the car that comes to mind. The Ford woodie wagon has an iconic image that has its own instant charm because they are so rare. In fact, Ford produced less than 9,000 of these in '47, and so that tells you how truly special it is to find a surviving example like this nearly 70 years later. The maroon paint is the perfect color to distinguish the rounded metal while still having a warm enough tone to compliment the real wood. It's preserved with the right amount of patina that will make people think it's all original (we even suspect it, too!) What you really love about this wagon is looking at all the finely crafted wood joints that come together to make an upright classic body. You also get to see up-close the adaptations made to fit the metal elements. The magic is really in the curves over the A-pillars and rear fenders. You'll marvel at where the front doors have a craftsman lower panel to meet the fenders. It's truly the last of an era as Ford would move away from full wood construction in 1948, and this one is preserved like the national treasure it is.

The original idea of a station wagon was to ferry hotel passenger to and from the train station, and so this one still has plenty of space to carry everyone thanks to three rows of seating. Just like the exterior, the tan leather on the seats and the rubber floor appear quite correct and authentic. But once again, it's the lumber that steals the show. The one-piece side panels are held in by the correct bright stainless bolts, the joints looks crisp and original, and framework in the roof makes the interior feel like a cabin. While this one has a true old-world atmosphere, when you sit behind the wheel there is a different kind of vintage feeling. Style was becoming a priority again in post-war America, and so Ford built a fashionable and symmetrical dashboard that's a perfect piece of art deco. And the working heater means you won't be uncomfortable if you decide to go out to the beach for dawn patrol.

The 239 cubic-inch flathead V8 really needs no introduction, and you'll be quite happy to know that this very correct-looking motor is the numbers-matching powerplant. In this neat little woodie it provides a wonderful punch and a great soundtrack. The engine bay is nicely detailed if not 100% correct, but the demerits are quite minor, like the newer battery. It still uses a correct oil-bath air cleaner, and the radiator hoses are proper reproductions that won't sag. It still runs off of six volts so you get the full experience and no worries about careless workmanship. The three-speed manual transmission shifts easily, and still feels quick around town no mater if you're carrying surfboards or a carload of passengers. This one keeps its authenticity right down color-matched steel wheels with shiny Ford hubcaps, trim rings, and fresh whitewall tires.
