Luxury, performance, and distinction have never been so affordable. This 1969 Mercury Cougar convertible has been given the right investment to have a great original-style presentation. And while it's the Mustang's lower production cousin (right down to the 351 V8 under the hood,) this rarity is available for a much more obtainable price.
The Cougar certainly has all the right muscle car details for the era, and it walks with big cat swagger. The styling is Mustang-sized, but it's a little more sophisticated - from the subtle body crease running from the front fender, to the rear wheel opening, to the hidden headlights that were definitely more Lincoln than Ford. A few extra dollops of chrome, including the gorgeous sequential taillights with their chrome surrounds, and this car manages to look both sporting and elegant at the same time. Plus, this has all the right GT appearance pieces such as the power dome hood, GT wheels, and rear spoiler. The Light Ivy Yellow certainly looks right for this dual premium and sporty role that the Cougar represented. That's because there was a recent professional respray of this factory-correct color. And the black side stripe not only does a great job of matching the power folding roof, but also it's a cool introduction to the interior color.
There is a feeling of premium the moment you sit in the driver's seat. The factory built these comfortable buckets with headrests, and it feels like 1969 all over again thanks to new seat covers with new padding inside. A center console, three-spoke steering wheel, round gauges, and all that wood trim – it's the perfect blend of luxury and performance. Besides just the great presentation, this one has all the right features, including provisions for the original-style AM radio and the ability to upgrade to air conditioning.
Power for the big cat comes from a 351 cubic-inch V8, which is a perfect fit in the Cougar's engine bay and gives the car great performance without the big block weight. The presentation is quite stock with the big blue air cleaner sitting on top of the big blue block, and there's even the factory compressor – it's the kind of honesty we're enjoying more of at car shows today. The four-barrel carburetor helps the 351 deliver a healthy dose of smooth torque, which means that the Cougar is never caught flat-footed. Underneath, the chassis is clean and well-maintained, with a great-sounding dual exhaust system whose tips are just barely visible beneath the rear valence – again, emphasizing the Cougar's subtle muscularity. Add in a three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and the modern grip of Goodyear tires, and you've got a total package worthy of the Cougar name.
We could tell you that the Cougar convertible gives you everything you love about a classic Mustang for less money, but you know this Mercury is much more than that. That's why we know this affordable classic droptop won't stick around long. Call today!!!
