Thanks to the iconic 911 shape, these cars never, ever look dated. Despite being nearly four decades old, this 911 still looks contemporary and commands a large dose of respect on the street. It's a real 911S, documented by Porsche, and offers upgrades like the "whale tail" rear spoiler, Euro-spec headlights that are a huge improvement over the dim US units (they look a lot better, too), and a chin spoiler that seems to plaster it to the pavement. The paint job was a bare-metal respray that rebuilt the finish at the molecular level, and with Porsche's legendary build quality and the ministrations of some of the industry's top guys, the result is an eyeball-popping shade of Guards Red that many fondly call "Arrest-Me Red." 911s are exceptionally well-built cars, and none of that is diminished with the restoration, and even details like the black rubber pieces and black anodized trim is in excellent shape with no UV damage or brittleness due to age. Somehow, this car defies the hands of time and looks not only well-preserved, but totally contemporary.

Evolution was at work inside, too, which works to your advantage with this 911S, because it's still a first-class place to work. High-back black leather buckets are supportive and comfortable and show an inviting patina that couldn't possibly be replicated. The standard Porsche steering wheel is a familiar look and the gauges are wonderfully simple, with a big tach front and center, a Porsche tradition from the earliest days. The appeal of an early 911 like this is the lightness and direct feeling of the controls. No power steering, no airbags or electronic aids, no weight-adding nonsense, just the stuff you need for the business of driving. Of course, it's all very high quality stuff, with plush carpets, a great dash pad that's as nice as the exterior trim, and fold-down rear seats that make the 911 surprisingly practical. Upgrades include a new A/C system with R134a refrigerant, so it's effective, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo system that still sounds great. The forward trunk also includes a strut tower brace that sharpens up the car's already impressive reflexes.

The 2.7-litre boxer six is this car's original, numbers-matching engine and was rebuilt to S-specs by Mark Finley at Rezoommotorsports. If you're not familiar with Mark's work, he's a PCA driving school chief instructor who knows these cars inside and out, and if there's anybody who can make them howl, it's him. The engine, transaxle, and suspension were all rebuilt about 4000 miles ago, and thanks to expert care and maintenance since the work was completed, this car is ready to rock today. The engine bay is very nicely detailed and extremely clean, showing no evidence of modifications or questionable workmanship, just precise German engineering just the way it's supposed to be. Turn the key and it starts with that characteristic Porsche rumble and on the road the light curb weight and incredible torque effortlessly hurl this car from corner to corner. And to augment that performance, later Porsche Turbo wheels have been fitted and wear 215/45/17 Goodyears that fill the wheel arches perfectly.
