350 TPI, 6 SPEED, A/C, CRUISE, TILT, VERY CLEAN, POWER EVERYTHING, FAST!!!

When they finally shoehorned the L98 into the F-body, our only remaining wish was that it could come with a manual gearbox. Sadly, there was no 5-speed that could handle the torque and fit in the transmission tunnel, so the original owner of this 1987 Pontiac Trans AM had to content himself with a 4-speed slushbox. Well, that's all changed, because this icy white GTA now carries a modern 6-speed manual that totally transforms it.

The GTA was arguably the best-looking of the second-generation Trans-Ams, with reasonably subtle ground effects and a bunch of hood vents that just look butch. Gone is the screaming chicken motif and instead it presents as a relatively tasteful performance car that looks especially fetching in white. This one seems to have been extremely well-maintained with a great shine to the paint and ground effects that haven't been bashed on parking curbs and sandblasted by gravel. The only notable modification is the replacement of the heavy, bulky wrap-around rear spoiler for a more discreet and low-profile wing from and earlier car, and it works quite well. Smoked taillight lenses were OEM equipment, so the rear end has a look that goes way back in Trans Am history, and all the factory badges are still in place on the fenders and B-pillar.

Pontiac also nailed the performance look inside, with deeply bolstered bucket seats and a low dashboard. The gray cloth upholstery is in excellent condition and seems to defy the fact that this car is nearly 30 years old. Nice carpets echo that sentiment, and the door panels show only minor signs of use. Factory instrumentation was fairly complete and the gauges still have bright, crisp markings. Like most GTAs, this one is loaded with options, including A/C, power windows, seats, and locks, cruise control, and a tilt wheel. The anemic old Delco tune box is gone, replaced by a newer AM/FM/cassette head unit that's period appropriate and sounds great. But perhaps the most noteworthy addition is the 6-speed manual shifter sticking out of the center console. Thanks to the march of technology, finding a manual transmission to handle the L98's torque today wasn't a problem and the installation looks very OEM. The Trans Am also offers a fairly commodious trunk.

The Corvette-based L98 was an obvious choice for the F-bodies, and packaging was easy since it's still a small block V8. Those long intake runners are easily identifiable and help make the prodigious torque for which these cars are famous. It's shockingly clean under the hood and largely stock, a rare state of affairs for a Trans Am of this vintage. It starts easily and has that characteristic cackling exhaust note thanks to oversized pipes underneath. A cold air intake frees up a few horsepower, and thanks to the interchangeability of parts, the 6-speed fits like it was born there. Combined with the stock 3.42 rear end, the car is still startlingly fast on the street, yet loafs along on the highway without effort. Stock suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes are up to the task and it wears GTA-spec gold mesh wheels with 225/60/16 Firestone radials.

A fun car turned into a great car merely by adding a clutch. It's as if your dreams have come true and it's time to be young again. Call today!
