PHS DOCUMENTED, #'S MATCHING, TRI POWER, HIGHLY COLLECTIVE GTO CONVERTIBLE

Is the first still the best? This 1964 GTO convertible makes a convincing argument that icons have no fear of time, particularly when they're packing their original, numbers-matching 389/Tri-Power V8 and a 4-speed. A wonderful ragtop that's ready to have fun this summer, this is an investment you can drive without fear.

OK, the restoration is a few years old, but that only means that its trailer queen days are over. Seriously, is there anything sadder than the father of all muscle cars spending its life in a garage being wiped with a diaper? No, what you need to do with the Grenadier Red Goat is to go out and burn some hi-test and spend your weekends listening to the cackle of the exhaust. But as a numbers-matching GTO convertible, it's definitely an A-list piece, so the restoration was done to a very high standard and then enjoyed, which is exactly the right way to do it. You can see in the photos that it's quite straight and the paint has a great shine that you'll take pleasure in waxing on Saturday afternoons before hitting the cruise spots that evening. The complex taillights were beautifully restored, and all the GTO badges are in place-just get ready to answer all the “Is it a real ... Please ask for the full description.

The complex taillights were beautifully restored, and all the GTO badges are in place-just get ready to answer all the "Is it a real GTO?" questions you're sure to get. Fortunately, you'll be proud to say, "Yes!"

The matching red bucket seat interior works on a number of levels. With a Hurst cue ball between the seats, there's no doubt about this car's sporting intentions, and this was right about the time when Pontiac perfected the luxury/muscle equation, so it's easy to spend a lot of time inside. The seats have reproduction seat covers that are broken in but not worn out, so they look inviting and still show well. The carpets were new at the time of restoration and show no signs of UV damage, which often happens to red interiors. The engine-turned gauge panel is a GTO trademark, and includes a rather rare factory tach. AM was the only choice in 1964, so the original radio remains in the dash, keeping this car faithful to its original specifications. The white power top features a matching red boot for a clean look, and the trunk is detailed with a reproduction mat and spare tire cover.

The engine is, indeed, the original, numbers-matching 389 and according to the PHS documents that accompany this convertible, it is a genuine Tri-Power, making it the top-of-the-heap for collectors. It was rebuilt right and detailed for show with all the correct bits, but a few years of driving enjoyment are starting to show, but I'd hardly call that a demerit. If you want a perfect one, they're out there and I bet you'll be afraid to drive it. Instead, this one fires up easily and drives beautifully, and with the 4-speed replacing the original automatic, it's a thrilling experience. There's no rust, no signs of previous damage, and the dual exhaust system sounds fabulous, not too loud but just right. Correct wheelcovers inside reproduction Firestone redlines give it the perfect '60s look.

Documented, matching-numbers GTO convertibles don't come along every day, and I guarantee this is one of those cars that just won't last long. Call today!
