VERY CLEAN ROLLS-ROYCE, 6.75L V8, PLUSH LEATHER, NICE 2-TONE PAINT!

“Things of quality have no fear of time.” That ideally sums up this 1978 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II, which is the archetypal Rolls-Royce that's recognized the world over and despite being 35 years old, it looks just as impressive today as it surely did when it was new.

For a Rolls, the two-tone silver-over-green paint is pretty flashy but not uncommon back in the disco era. Given how spectacular it looks, it's either a testament to the quality of the factory paint or an impressive respray that duplicates the hand-rubbed look of the original lacquer. This is a really big car, but the proportions, and especially that two-tone look, mask its mass and reduce it merely to “imposing.” Bright chrome, including the German silver radiator shell, adds flash to the car everywhere you look, but none of it is misplaced or inelegant, accentuating the look the way diamond earrings enhance a beautiful woman. The doors fit with a precision that you probably haven't experienced before and it almost seems redundant to mention that the gaps are straight and tight. While neglected Silver Shadows can be a horrific nightmare to put right, this one shows decades of loving care in every single component.

For a Rolls, the two-tone silver-over-green paint is pretty flashy but not uncommon back in the disco era. Given how spectacular it looks, it's either a testament to the quality of the factory paint or an impressive respray that duplicates the hand-rubbed look of the original lacquer. This is a really big car, but the proportions, and especially that two-tone look, mask its mass and reduce it merely to "imposing." Bright chrome, including the German silver radiator shell, adds flash to the car everywhere you look, but none of it is misplaced or inelegant, accentuating the look the way diamond earrings enhance a beautiful woman. The great thing about the Connolly leather inside this Roller is that it only gets better with age. Softer and more plus than ordinary automotive leather, the tan seats with contrasting piping have a warm, inviting look that does nothing to diminish the interior's elegance. A dark green dashboard with real walnut panels echoes the two-tone look of the bodywork and the Wilton wool carpets are so sinfully plush that you'll feel uncomfortable putting your shoes on them. There's a lot of room for everyone, and the driver is treated to a fairly comprehensive array of Jaeger instruments and switchgear that feels heavy and substantial. Of course, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that everything was standard equipment, including ice cold A/C, an AM/FM/cassette/8-track stereo system, as well as power windows, locks, and seats. The boot (that's a trunk to us Yanks) is also beautifully finished with matching carpets piped in green leather. Overall preservation is impressive and once again, it surely looks as if someone has adored this car from day one.

The big 6.75-litre V8 can trace its history back to the early 1960s, but even today a version of it is still in use in turbocharged Bentleys, so it must have a lot going for it. The under-hood area looks insanely complex, but in truth the hardware is quite reliable if it's properly maintained. Every single component was obviously designed to eliminate noise and vibration, regardless of cost or complexity, which is a big part of the Roller's appeal: luxury for luxury's sake. The A/C system was converted to R134a refrigerant so it works properly and as you'd expect, accoutrements like power steering and 4-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment. The chassis looks stout enough to support a railroad trestle and includes a pleasant-sounding dual exhaust system that's muted, yet powerful. Chrome hubcaps and 235/70/15 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall radials add to the car's flash, but if you're driving a Rolls-Royce, you're not really trying to keep a low profile, now are you?

Every bit as elegant and ostentatious as you've always heard, this Silver Shadow represents an iconic luxury car with few peers and available for pennies on the dollar compared to when it was new. Call today!
