This 1949 Mercury coupe offers all the traditional mods, a gorgeous candy paint job, and the ability to drive anywhere in comfort. All the traditional body mods can be found on this Merc, it's been chopped, shaved, decked, nosed, and frenched for just the right look, and all the work was expertly done. Built in 1999, it has spent most of its life in protected, heated storage, so it still looks fresh and the sleek lines of the Merc coupe will never go out of style. It has that incredible top chop, so it looks right, and thanks to careful build quality, the doors fit well, but you might want to watch your head when you climb in. The front grille is from a '54 Chevy, the taillights are from a '59 Cadillac, and while most of the trim was shaved, all the remaining chrome was refinished to a very high level when the car was built. The most remarkable thing about this car is that they got the stance just right, so it doesn't look heavy or clumsy like many lead sleds, but rather sleek and powerful, which was surely the intent all along.
Inside, you'll find a beautiful custom interior with leather-wrapped bucket seats up front, a custom center console, and the same artistic flair as the bodywork. The striking door panels are beautifully sculpted and use the original garnish moldings that were also modified to fit the chopped window openings. That dash is from a '59 Chevrolet and has been artfully integrated into the interior, offering an array of Dakoda Digital instruments flanking the large, round speedometer. A tilt steering column is topped with a billet wheel and the controls for the Vintage Air A/C system are discreetly tucked out of sight under the dash and blows cold today. Entertainment comes from an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit with speakers throughout the interior, so long-distance cruising is a pleasure, especially with cruise control on the features list. There's also plenty of room in the trunk, which offers matching gray carpets and a custom bulkhead to keep the working bits out of sight.
There's nothing traditional about the powerplant, which is a thundering 402 cubic inch big block Chevy. Beautifully finished with lots of chrome and billet aluminum, it's designed to show and go equally well, with big power available at any speed and the kind of effortless performance only a big V8 can deliver. A Holley carburetor on an Edelbrock intake handles the fuel/air mix, while a set of custom long-tube headers and a great-sounding dual exhaust system manage the fumes. A big aluminum radiator with electric fan keeps things cool, and there's electronic ignition to light the fires. It's backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, so it cruises easily in today's traffic. The stock Mercury suspension is gone, replaced by a Monte Carlo front clip, air bags, and a narrowed 9-inch Ford rear end on leaf springs in back. The chassis and floors are solid and it sits on polished Torque Thrusts with properly staggered big-n-little BFG radials.
Like the timeless '32 roadster and the '41 coupe, this Mercury lead sled will never go out of style. This stunning build gets all the details right and adds the convenience and performance of a fully sorted modern powertrain. Call today!
