We get asked a lot about what kind of car is affordable today that might be a worthwhile investment for the future. It's a tough question, but there's no question that this 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport would be on that list of smart buys. With just 1034 original miles and the rare Torch Red interior, this is a very safe bet.
The Grand Sport was one part retrospective homage, one part end-of-the-line celebration, and one part sportscar, all wrapped in one of the best-looking factory paint packages ever devised. Combining Admiral Blue with Arctic White stripes and those bright red hash marks on the fenders was a stroke of genius, giving it a look that dates back to the early '60s and resonates deep within Corvette lore. With just over 1000 original miles, you know it's in fantastic shape and completely unmarred by accidents or major road rash, and by 1996, the guys at Bowling Green were putting together the best cars General Motors built. Other details include special chrome 'Grand Sport' badges on the front fenders, a stripe on the removable roof panel, and special fender flares for the ZR-1 spec rear rubber.
It makes for a car that is not only instantly recognizable, but also the best-looking C4 ever built.
Only 217 of the 810 Grand Sport coupes built had the Torch Red leather interior (actually, it's one of only 91 coupes with red interior and the F45 suspension, but who's counting?), and it is totally the right choice. Most guys wimped out and bought basic black because it was safe, but if you're going to own a car like this (and invest in one for the future) the smart choice is the unusual color combination. That's not to say it doesn't look awesome, because it does, with contrasting 'Grand Sport' embroidery on the headrests, and black carpets and dash to keep it from getting out of hand. Everything was standard on the Grand Sport, and on a Corvette, that was a substantial list of features including A/C, power windows, locks, mirrors, and seats, the aforementioned adjustable suspension, and cruise control, all of which make the Corvette a fantastic travelling partner at any speed. The digital/analog gauge cluster delivers the information in a comprehensive way that works quite well, and everything remains fully functional. This car has been something special since the day it was born.
All Grand Sports received the top engine, the revised LT4 350 cubic inch V8. It was the last of the original Chevy small blocks and packed 340 horsepower and a love of high-RPM operation. You can recognize it by its red intake manifold, which really brightens up the engine bay. It's completely stock, of course, and with just 1,034 miles, it's had nothing but a few fluid changes to keep it healthy. Every fitting, hose, clamp, and screw is factory-issue, and that makes this car something special for preservationists. It also runs like a new car, exercised just enough to keep everything working properly. The six-speed manual transmission was the only choice with the LT4 engine, and with the F45 suspension, it's a great combination of streetable comfort and aggressive handling. Corvette brakes are legendary and these live behind black A-mold wheels wearing ZR-1 sized rubber, 275/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear Goodyear GS-C radials, which are the car's original tires.
Fully documented with all the critical papers, including a window sticker, build sheet, dealer invoice, and original bill of sale, this Grand Sport is as close to a sure thing in the collector car world as we'll ever see. Call today!
