1993 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT

Ford decided to send off the Fox platform with a big bang, and the SVT division cooked up the Mustang Cobra. Using off-the-shelf performance parts that the 5.0 community had been using for years, this 1993 Ford SVT Cobra was more of everything Mustang lovers wanted, and has become a sure-fire future collectable.

Showing just 14,181 original miles, this car was obviously purchased as an investment, not actually to drive. Which is kind of a shame, since the Cobra really is the best Fox Mustang ever built. Of the three available colors, Black looks the most potent, and with the revised ground effects, special rear spoiler, and additional ventilation through a custom grille, the Cobra had a unique look that didn't erase the Mustang's DNA completely. As an investment piece, this one has always been immaculately kept, and the finish looks almost factory-fresh, which is the highest praise we can offer any car like this. And unlike so many of its siblings, it remains completely unmodified, right down to the exhaust system. The headlights haven't started to get cloudy, as happens on Fox Mustangs of a certain age, the weather seals are still supple, the chin hasn't been mangled on parking curbs, and well, there aren't many nits to pick here. This is the kind of car collectors dream of finding.

Leather was one of the few options on the Cobra, and this black hatchback has got it. Aside from some very minor comfort marks on the driver's seat, it's pretty much as new. The Cobra was not much different inside than the standard Mustang GT, but that's a complement, because it was functional and easy to use. Compared to today's cars, the fingertip controls for the headlights, fog lamps, and rear defroster are easy, the big rotary dials for the A/C are concise and clear, and the big leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel feels great in your hands. Cobras came loaded with things like power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and the aforementioned A/C, and this one adds extras like the sunroof, and an AM/FM/CD stereo system that still sounds good today. The only modification of note are tinted windows, but that's probably why the interior is so immaculate, since it hasn't been baked by the sun. Even the cargo bay looks new, complete with tie-down straps and a cargo cover.

The venerable 5.0 liter V8 got a horsepower injection in the form of the GT40 induction package. Modified heads, a special cast aluminum intake, larger fuel injectors, an oversized throttle body and mass-air sensor, plus special calibrations all help it eke out a rated 235 horsepower. Now, we all know the 5.0 from 1992 was making 225 horsepower, and this was just Ford playing games with the numbers, as this same setup was rated by Ford Motorsport at 295 horsepower. Whatever the number, it's still torquey as all get out, but this one also doesn't mind revving, and it's a joy to run through the 5-speed transmission's throws. And shockingly, this is one 5.0 that's still 100% stock, right down to the air cleaner and mufflers. 4-wheel discs were a welcome addition to the Cobra (finally!) and they hide behind special 17-inch alloys that were a 1-year-only feature, and are unique to each side of the car. Recent 245/45/17 performance radials are likely only the second set of tires this car has ever worn.

Investment grade and still a joy to drive, this is the 5.0 Mustang that you'll want to keep forever. This black beauty wont last. Call today!
