The great thing about General Motors performance packages is that a few innocent-looking letters and numbers associated witha performance package can turn a good car into a great one. For example, the WS6 added to this 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am makes this coupe an under $18K Holy Grail find.

This is the slipperiest Firebird design ever, and so it's only fitting that this coupe wears a slick black lacquer that could look wet even in a desert. This is a rapidly appreciating collector's car, and so it's nice to see the previous two owners have gone to great lengths to keep the body and its original shade of midnight in pristine condition. But a car like this was made for more than just being parked as garage art. The WS6 package was never subtle with Ram Air hood scoops, flares, and large fog lights all competing for your attention. But finishing it in black gives this one a sinister appearances that tells everyone on the street, "Don't mess with me!" Best of all this is a T-top coupe, which means you get the convertible wind-in-your-hair feeling without giving up the rigidity of a roof section.

Pontiac's stylists did one heck of a job with the Trans Am's interior, visually separating it from its cousin, the Camaro, and giving it a unique look. Deeply sculpted leather buckets are supportive enough for the spirited driving that this car encourages, and as the top-of-the-line machine, just about everything was standard equipment. That means air conditioning, power windows, power locks, dual airbags, cruise control, tilt wheel, and power seats. This one is so original it even comes with the factory premium AM/FM/CD stereo with seven-band equalizer.

Checking the WS6 option at you Pontiac dealer meant the Corvette's LT1 5.7-liter motor would be living under your hood. But the upgrades to the fuel-injected V8 did not stop there. The Ram Air intake boosted power from the Trans Am's 285 hp to 305. It gets to utilize this muscle better than the standard T/A thanks to a 1LE performance suspension, 10-bolt rear end, and larger 17-inch wheels that were specific to the WS6 package. This Pontiac might have all the right go-fast features, but because it's a modern classic, it is also everyday comfortable. This includes the convenience of a four-speed automatic, which provides enough gears to be quick off the line as well as cruise comfortably on the highway. Plus, there's power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, and ABS. But as easy as it is to pilot this Pontiac, it has never been a daily driver. This has been treated like a classic all its life and has averaged less than 2,200 miles per year for a total of 41,129 miles on the odometer. Brand new tires were just installed at our showroom as well, so she is ready to go.

The WS6 Trans Am is a rare bird with only 2,051 coupes built in 1996.
