Tributes and clones are a great way to get into a dream car for a much smaller price, and this 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang fastback tribute certainly does it correctly. It has a long list of upgrades, a powerful 428 Cobra Jet, and the right look to make everyone at the local show do double-take when it rolls in.
A Shelby-built GT500 will cost a fortune. They've got a following of enthusiasts who know what it takes to have a true snake-bitten Mustang. That's why it's worth extra for a nice tribute like this that gets the details right. There's just no mistaking the Shelby look. This one was taken down to bare metal and rebuilt in Carroll's image. The custom fiberglass hood; the functional side scoops; the racing lights in the grille; the molded rear deck lid; and the sequential taillights - it all makes an impressive statement. 1968's Lime Gold paint is one of those unmistakable Mustang colors that was available to the GT500, and was so distinctive, people applied it years after it was taken off the option list. And if you really want a great-looking Shelby, don't forget the 10-spoke alloy wheel with gold accents that match the Cobra center caps.
The black bucket seat interior is clean and pristine, including the seat covers, door panels, carpets, and dash pad. Basically this one feels like Carroll Shelby built it right down to the roll cage. But this GT500 tribute also reflects the luxury nature that would be added to later Shelbys, and it appears loaded with a center console, period-correct AM/FM radio, and woodgrain wheel and shifter. There's even air conditioning so you can stay cool on the inside while you heat up the tires on the outside.
Under the hood is exactly what you want to see. This is Ford's big 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 and it carries all the great Cobra pieces, like the fined air cleaner and valve covers. This engine has not been overly upgraded like some chrome king GT500s out there. Instead, this is dressed to impress with its authentic-style originality. And those who don't see the engine bay will hear this big V8 coming thanks to long tube headers that are connected to an Xlerator dual exhaust. But more than just show-off, this one was also built to drive. The motor is a strong runnier, and you'll have no trouble piloting it around town thanks to the C6 three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and limited slip rear end with versatile 3.50 ratio. There's even front disc brakes and Cooper Cobra tires.
Beautifully built, very accurate, and surprisingly fast, this Shelby tribute is too good to just call a "clone"...most will be hard pressed to spot it as such. In fact, it fits nicely next to a true $190k GT500 in our showroom. Take it home today for a fraction of the price. Call now!!
