#'S MATCHING LS5 W/ A FRESH BUILD, ORIGINAL W CODE SS Z15 OPTION, COLORS CORRECT

It took until 1972, but Chevy finally started putting engine codes in the VIN. As a result, we can say with confidence that this handsome 1972 Chevelle is a real-deal SS454 with its matching-numbers engine. If you thought all the muscle was dead by '72, take another look because this is one impressive A-body.

Starting with the unusual (and correct) code 68 Midnight Bronze paint, you have the makings of a car that will get even jaded Chevy fans giving it a closer look. Many of them like the look of the later Chevelles with their single headlights and rounded fender lines, and dark colors like this emphasize the very stylish design. A cowl-induction hood is always welcome, particularly when it's fully functional, and they wisely left off any additional stripes or decals to let the ultra-straight bodywork speak for itself. No, it's not perfect, but between the gorgeous paint with just a bit of gold metallic buried in it and the subtle overall look, this is a car that does a lot with a little. The SS badges and blacked-out grille are authentic and original to the car, as all Chevelles with a W-code 454 also received the Z15 SS package option, making this one a legit piece of muscle car ...

The SS badges and blacked-out grille are authentic and original to the car, as all Chevelles with a W-code 454 also received the Z15 SS package option, making this one a legit piece of muscle car history. Bright chrome bumpers have just the right amount of shine to possibly be original, and a black vinyl top is an upscale addition with no issues underneath, no bubbling, and no wrinkles in the material. Someone did this Chevelle right.

The black interior was restored to original specs, including fresh seat covers, black carpets, and a new dash pad. The door panels may very well be original, giving you a good idea of how well-maintained this car is, and a full array of instruments, including a factory tach, gives it a look that's appropriate for an SS model. Options include the center console with horseshoe shifter, factory A/C (converted to R134a refrigerant), as well as power steering and brakes. There is no radio, but that means that it's ready for the entertainment system of your choice and with all the old cars running around with AM/FM/cassette units from the '80s, perhaps it's just as well. The trunk is finished with a new mat and includes a matching fifth wheel and jack assembly.

Anything with 454 cubic inches under the hood was a legitimate threat in 1972. The LS5 454 has just seen a fresh rebuild of the original #'s matching block. Orange paint and chrome valve covers are to be expected in any big block Chevelle, and it seems that they resisted the urge to add a lot of performance equipment to the build and instead left it in factory configuration. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a 12-bolt rear end were standard with the big block and it carries a stock-style dual exhaust system that sounds right. Classic SS wheels with charcoal gray centers give it a sophisticated look and are protected by recent Dunlop white-letter radials.

Interesting, documented, and highly unusual, this '72 Chevelle SS rightfully deserves its place among the greats of the muscle car era. Call today!
