LS5. 4-speed. Factory air. Matching numbers. Shall I go on? This 1971 Corvette has all the right parts for Corvette fans, whether they're numbers guys or drivers, and wraps it all up in a gorgeous Mulsanne Blue roadster body. And it's affordable, too!
You can't help but love Stingray convertibles, regardless of what's powering them, but when there's a big block under the hood, well, people tend to treat those cars with a lot of respect. Given this one's status and pedigree, the no-holds-barred restoration took it to a very high level with super smooth fiberglass bodywork and gleaming Mulsanne Blue paint on top. A vented big block hood means it's easy to spot this predator from a distance, yet the blue doesn't advertise its presence like its original code 987 Ontario Orange might have. Modern paints give it a fantastic shine that looks deep enough to fall into if you're not careful, and it fits together better than any factory-issued 'Vette we've ever seen. Chrome bumpers would disappear a few years later, but they remain popular with collectors, so the nose and tail protectors on this car were refinished to show standards and reinstalled, and the rest of the bright work is in excellent shape.
The black interior provides everything you need in your high-performance 2-seater. Deep bucket seats wear fresh reproduction seat covers, the carpets use the correct weave and nap, and new door panels look crisp and sharp against the blue paint. The gauges look too perfect to be 40 year old, and both the steering wheel and shiny shifter for the 4-speed gearbox look right. IF we had to pick nits in this very well done interior, it might be the tiny crack on the dash just above the instrument panel, but beyond that, it's really quite nice. An original AM/FM radio lives in the dash and the unique and very cool fiber-optic lamp monitoring system lights up the center console at night. This rare Corvette carries a recent black convertible top that is great for surprise showers, as well as a desirable removable hardtop that was restored with the rest of the car.
However, the real reason you're reading this and why this car holds so much appeal, is the LS5 454 cubic inch big block under the hood. A bit tamer than the wild LS6, it makes just as much torque and enough horsepower to be a predator on any street in America. Properly dressed in Chevy Orange with wide big block valve covers and a twin-snorkel air cleaner, it looks ready to show and runs like it's ready to rock. The LS5's more street-friendly demeanor also permits such civilized additions as A/C, power steering and brakes, and a minimum of fouled spark plugs. It's backed by a 4-speed manual transmission, and that bulletproof Muncie is happy to slam out shifts with all the big block's torque running through it. Long-tube headers bolster an already robust torque curve, and while the chassis isn't detailed for show, it's in good order so you don't have to think twice about exercising all 365 horses on tap. Classic Rally wheels have been fitted with cool 235/70/15 redline radials for a period look and modern handling.
