FRESHLY BUILT 355 CI MOTOR, A/C RECENTLY SERVICED TO R-134A, CUSTOM INTERIOR

This 1970 Chevrolet El Camino is an affordable and fun way to get some high performance practicality in your life. With a long list of recent work, including a snarky 355 cubic inch V8, this anthracite hauler offers impressive performance to go with its wonderful good looks.

The low-key color on this car works really well to keep it under the radar, but up close you'll note that it sparkles with depth and offers a lot of interesting details that make this car stand out from the garden-variety El Caminos you've been looking at. To start, the sheetmetal is very straight, so it fits together very well and the reflections in its surface are clear, so you know they took their time putting it together. You'll note a subtle cowl induction hood was added, and the central dome was painted black for a little contrast, then outlined with a hand-painted pinstripe that really sets it off. Additional pinstripes were added along the flanks of the car and it transforms the utilitarian Elky into something much more sophisticated. Painting the lower edges of the body black also enhances the long, low look without disturbing the car's clean original lines. It might be done hauling gear for you, though, ...

It might be done hauling gear for you, though, because the glossy black bed is simply gorgeous, and you'll probably have a hard time throwing anything rougher than a towel back there today.

The interior is equally tasteful with its upgrades, starting with a set of low-back bucket seats wrapped in comfortable gray fabric. Custom door panels were stitched up to match, and it's nice to see that they glanced at the factory design to make it look right, but didn't just order up a set of repro panels and call it a day. There's more attention to the little things on the dashboard, which is covered in a rather convincing burled walnut applique that even extends to the auxiliary gauge panel under the dash. Factory gauges include a somewhat rare tachometer, and the car is loaded with options like factory A/C and a tilt column. Somewhere along the line it received an Alpine AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit that still sounds good. A trick B&M shifter between the seats gives it a bit of a racy feel when you're driving it, and unlike many of its siblings, there's a full-sized spare with cover stashed behind the passenger's seat.

The engine is a freshly built 355 cubic inch V8 with just 1500 test and tune miles on it. An upgraded camshaft, ported and polished heads, and an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold with 650 CFM Holley carburetor ensure that it's more than just a warmed-over stocker. The A/C system was serviced and converted to R134a refrigerant, and a few chrome dress-up pieces look great in the all-business engine bay. Backed by a built TH400 3-speed automatic with a 2800 RPM stall torque converter and 4.11 gears on a Posi in the 12-bolt rear, there's enough strength here for a lot more horsepower. Long-tube headers help build torque and it sounds rather menacing at idle. Big 15-inch aluminum wheels have a period look and carry staggered 225/70/15 front and 275/60/15 rear Goodyear radials.
