#'S MATCHING 455 RIV, WINDOW STICKER & BUILD CARD, CORRECT COLOR CODE, MUST SEE!
The "boat tail" Rivieras were controversial when they were new and today it's admittedly a love/hate situation, but if you're one of the lovers, this 1973 Riv is an awesome specimen. Loaded with fully functional options, a matching-numbers big block, and a great color combination, this is the one you want to add to your serious Buick collection.
Code 11 Arctic White is one of those colors that will always look good and lets the dramatic bodywork speak for itself. And unlike so many of the cars of the era, it doesn't look out of place in white. There are signs of previous Buick design through the Riviera, including the sweep-spear along the flanks. This car sports all its original sheetmetal, including quarter panels, so it fits together the way the factory intended. I don't know what's involved in replacing them, but I have to believe it's a major project so it's always better to let the factory to it right in the first place. It's been repainted and shines up very nicely, and if it's drama you want, this big Buick definitely delivers. The black vinyl roof insert is in great condition as well, adding a little contrast, and all the chrome and stainless is brilliant.
The 60/40 split bench seat is covered in correct code 698 black vinyl that does a pretty good impersonation of leather. The dashboard is as dramatic as that rear window, offering the driver a wrap-around console that puts all the controls right at the driver's fingertips. The factory instrumentation consists of only the basics, but a pair of auxiliary gauges keeps tab on temperature and oil pressure. Options include power windows and seat, a tilt column, cruise control, and powerful A/C that uses R134a refrigerant so it's inexpensive to maintain. A later AM/FM/cassette head unit was installed in the dash, although a restored AC Delco radio is included. And even with that sloping and deeply sculpted rear deck, trunk space is impressive and includes the original spare tire that's never been used!
Buick's mighty 455 cubic inch V8 seemed largely immune to the horsepower reductions that were affecting the other auto makers, and with a huge swell of torque it moves the bit Riv with effortless ease and a burly V8 rumble. It is the original, numbers-matching engine and with a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, it has more in common with muscle cars of yore than a luxury boat. Bright Dante Red paint is a Buick tradition for decades and it wears a correct air cleaner and reproduction decals. Extensive maintenance receipts accompany the car and there's plenty of evidence that it's been properly maintained, and with just 116,000 original miles, this big Buick still feels young. The original TH400 3-speed automatic delivers creamy smooth shifts and with 2.93 gears in the 12-bolt rear end, it's a superlative highway cruiser. Gorgeous Buick Road Wheels give the Riviera a sporting attitude that belies its size and are shod with 235/75/15 whitewall radials.
