We know you want this 1976 International Scout II because it looks tougher and is less common than just about any other capable classic 4x4. And it only gets better on a full package that delivers a nice metallic finish, proper V8 power, and some great upgrades to make this convertible SUV a fun cruiser.

We love International Harvester Scouts a little more than the other convertible 4x4s out there just because we know they represent old school toughness. The IH name conjures images of machines that know how to work a full day out in the fields. But the Scout line also had style. And this one really seems to bring those two worlds together. It has the upright body lines that give it a sturdy appearance, and the tall 4x4 stance shows off a true capability. But this one has also been updated later in life with a nice gray metallic finish. So when you take this convertible SUV out for a sunny Sunday drive, the light loves to unleash an added radiance as it reflects off the finish. And even when you have the roof in place, the newer white top has a look of premium appeal.

For the same reason we like the look of the white top against the gray paint, we also love that they more recently upgraded the upholstery inside to a bright white. And since this is made of a durable vinyl, it should remain looking this good for some time to come. This is a classic vehicle, and so it's nice to see that they left some factory-style touches in places like the door panels and wood-like trim on the dash. But this was also upgraded in all the right places. You see the functional side with the liner paint on the floor. And there's also added comfort with the cup holders and marine-grade AM/FM/CD stereo with upgraded speakers and Bluetooth. There are even provisions for R134a air conditioning (it may need servicing to blow ideally cold again.) High-back bucket seats, a center console in-between, floor shifters, and a classic grippy steering wheel make sure that this full package also gives you a commanding driving position.

International's own optional 304 cubic-inch V8 means a unique presentation. And while the bold red block is fun to show off, the real treat is that it fires up and runs like a vehicle that has seen long-term respect. It's mated to a three-speed automatic transmission for easy driving, and the power steering and front disc brakes add to this anytime driver feeling. The Scout's four-wheel drive system is a stout Dana two-speed transfer case that connects to Dana 44 axles at both ends. So, while this has the right features for Sunday cruising, just know that this one also has the right combo for true 4x4 toughness. But no matter where you drive it, this old-school SUV draws a crowd. After all, there's just something a bit cooler when a IH shows up.
