We love a good classic Land Rover because it looks like it's ready for an adventure no matter if it's climbed to the top of a mountain or just parked in the driveway. That's what makes this 1961 Land Rover Series II 109 so appealing. It has upgraded power and better rugged features without losing the true vintage appeal.
Owning a classic 4x4 like this means getting the look just right. That starts with elements like the safari rack on the roof, tow hitch, mud guards, an off-road jack, spare tire on the hood, and stone guards for the headlights. And speaking of the lights, you may have noticed the headlights and full roof rack have been recently upgraded to LEDs. It means you'll have no trouble seeing the trail day or night. And the recessed center section of the Series II is the perfect place for a large Warn winch. Plus, the paint theme on this one is well-chosen. It carries the iconic Land Rover Series look thanks to wearing a correct-style green. It looks quite nice today thanks to a solid investment in the paint and body in 2016. It carries the iconic Land Rover Series look thanks to wearing a correct-style green. It looks quite nice today thanks to a solid investment in the paint and body in 2016. And the white steel wheels coordinate with the white hardtop to add some style without jeopardizing substance. This one is clean, confident, and absolutely rugged. So even if you just drive a couple of blocks to the grocery store, there are going to be people wondering what kind of journey you were just undertaking.
The interior has been restored to feel fresh but stays vintage in all the right places. It has a terrific classic feel with the thin/grippy steering wheel, tall gearstick, Jaeger/Smiths gauges, and proper red and yellow levers for four-wheel drive. But more than just vintage, there's added comfort from recent upgrades like an armrest center console, cup holders, and a full stereo system with a modern AM/FM tuner, Bluetooth, and full stereo speakers. The rear is built for plenty of function. This is the longer wheelbase 109 model, and you get to take full advantage of it with a wide-swinging rear door and a rubber mat to protect the floor from big cargo. Plus, the hallmark jump seats allow you to bring along plenty of family and friends whenever you like.
The engine bay has a terrific upgrade that may only be initially apparent to the most stringent Land Rover fans. That's because the Chevrolet inline-six looks like it belonged here since day one. The 250 cubic-inch motor is larger than anything from the Series Land Rovers, and it even rivals the displacement of the V8s that came in the later Defenders. It's a long-standing Chevy powerhouse known for its torque and stout construction. Parts availability is even better than a usual Land Rover, and this even has good supporting components like an Optima battery and an electric fan. The engine change and larger radiator necessitated the front end change to later front fenders. So you know this is a 4x4 that was made to be enjoyed. A two-speed transfer case and deep treads on the modern BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain tires assure that you can keep going even when the trail ends. And features like power steering and power brakes are nice for those times when you're just enjoying this classic on the road. And no matter where you go, the control of a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive is appreciated.
