This is one of those cool classics that generate interest wherever it goes, especially with VW people. After all, a 1970 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter panel truck like this wasn't even really allowed in the USA when new. So to have something this unique is already attractive even before you check out the comprehensive thoughtful restoration that upgraded the exterior, interior, suspension, and air-cooled power.
The Chicken Tax had made it too expensive for VW to import trucks to the USA, and a second-generation Type 2 like this likely had to be independently imported. That makes it truly rare and distinct even before you check out all the work that went into this one. This was given a nut-and-bolt restoration completed around 2017. It was stripped down to bare metal and took extra time building it up to make sure the body looked excellent. The Neptune Blue paint has a terrific finish, and it has that ideal classic VW service vehicle look. Plus, we could almost call this a two-tone with the white bumpers, wheels, roof, and big VW emblem leading the way. You'll even appreciate the little details, like the clean glass, fresh weather-stripping, front step bumpers, and rear mud guards. ... Please ask for the full description.

Description
And this pickup upgrades its clever packaging with a large slide-out box for the under-bed storage. The bed was one of the smartest designs around where you can take down any side of the bed for easy loading, but now that this has ash wood slats, you'll likely fold down all sides just to show off this awesome lumber.
The saddle tan interior gives this the kind of sophisticated European look that you'd expect more from a Porsche than a VW. But since this is marine-grade Ranger Boat vinyl, you also get the robustness you want in a pickup. It has the right hints of vintage with the classic dual-spoke steering wheel, factory dash, working dome lights, and classic AM/FM radio. But features like the EMPI shifter also clue you in on the right upgrades. We especially like the additional readouts. They are all VDO to keep the original VW spirit, but now you have handy readouts like the oil pressure and tach. It all lets you know this was thoughtfully packaged to be a proper driver.
The flat-four motor is a big part of this pickup's desirability. It's the same powerhouse that brought the Beetle its global reputation for being tough-as-nails. So to have it in a pickup only adds to its utility. But there's more here than just durability. The engine bay has the same clean and smooth style as the rest of this truck, and so it properly showcases this special motor. The 1600cc dual-port unit was rebuilt and enlarged to 1904cc total. It now includes a new magnesium case, Mahle pistons, a 74mm balanced crank, upgraded connecting rods, CB Performance Panchito 044 cylinder heads, and Dellorto 36 DRLA 36 dual carburetors. The four-speed manual transmission is a Rusty Bottom Garage (the VW experts) rebuilt unit with a new blue clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing. As you look underneath, you see a setup that looks as clean as day one. Plus, you'll also spot Bilstein shocks, fresh brushings, General Grabber tires, power brakes, front discs, and thick sway bars front and rear. It makes for one of the most confident driving experiences you're likely ever going to feel in these Type 2s.
You know these don't come up for sale too often in the USA, and so it's time to act fast before one of the most fun and distinct examples is gone forever. Call today!!!
