Description

This 1978 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser is the perfect mix of vintage and new. After all, this classic 4x4 has a timeless look, and there are the right reinforcements to live up to its go-anywhere reputation. Plus, it's also a restored machine that has been given terrific upgrades, like a fuel-injected V8 heart.

We like the look of this Land Cruiser in white. It's a later application that has a nice gloss and smooth finish to make sure this 4x4 also fits in with the city crowd. Of course, we bet you are also thinking about how mud will look against this. After all, there's a terrific contrasting black that shows off this FJ's beefy side. The front bumper not only has a bull bar, but also the kind of Hella lights that can turn night into day. The roof has a full rack on top, and there's another storage rack on the back that's opposite of the full-size spare. Those upgraded black 15-inch wheels hold meaty tires, and even the black rear bumper gives you a proper trailer hitch. So it all makes for a package where you can see the style is in the substance.

The interior is built to deliver both function and comfort. Up front you have Mastercraft high-back bucket sport seats. There's also a proper shoulder belts and a full custom roll cage. The rear has the classic setup with jump seats to carry friends, or they fold up to give you excellent cargo space. Some upgrades are multi-purpose. For example, the armrest center console is also a nice lockbox. And the wood-rimmed steering wheel has thin spokes to give you a nice view of the full AutoMeter Sport-Comp gauge package. Some pieces are there for pure comfort, like the AM/FM/CD stereo w/Bluetooth, upgraded speakers, and provisions for R134a air conditioning (will need a servicing to blow cold again.) Other pieces are a true sign of worthwhile upgraded function, like the Holley EFI controller on the dash.

The 350 cubic-inch V8 under the hood is an awesome enhancement. We love these Toyotas for their near indestructible reputation, and the Chevy small block unit shares that kind of status. Plus, this has upgraded power and all-around consistency thanks to the Holley electronic fuel injection system sitting atop an Edelbrock intake. It's a clean setup with the right pieces, including an electronic ignition, newer wiring, and an aluminum radiator w/electric fan. So it's a terrific power package that also knows how to run strong. The two-speed 4x4 transfer case, Warn locking hubs, lifted suspension, and Cooper Discoverer Maxx tires all are great for when the road ends. And when you're just taking this Toyota out on pavement, the three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and four-wheel power disc brakes are handy features, too.
