Proper V8 power, four-on-the-floor, and a desirable triple-black style make this 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible quite appealing. And the price even leaves room in your budget to get personal with this premium drop-tops potential.
The Cougar name always seemed to fit this car well. Its design has a confident swagger like it owns the territory it roams. You see this confidence in the power dome of the hood, the flared fenders, and the big/flat rear deck. And we love how the silver pinstripe zooms down the side of the car and highlights the kick-up behind the doors. It's all presented in a glossy black paint made even more distinguished by a black convertible top. The clean lines, complete trim, and upgraded American Racing Torq Thrust wheels deliver a style that looks quite good out on the road. The finish and overall presentation, inside and out, are driver quality. That's an important distinction here. After all, you can use the value price to step this one up to your dream project, but there's also something quite nice about how this already offers a kind of carefree style where you have extra cash in your pocket and don't care about wayward pebbles in the road.

The black interior joins the paint and the roof to deliver the ultra-desirable triple-black presentation. There are nice details like a power convertible, a color-matched convertible boot, plenty of wood-like trim, and nice carpeting. This certainly feels like a Mercury with the premium features that keep the driver in mind. This includes high-back front bucket seats, an armrest center console in-between, and a wood-rimmed sports steering wheel. And the large tach goes quite well with the Hurst floor shifter.
Power for the big cat comes from a 351 cubic-inch V8. The presentation is honest with the big blue block, matching valve covers, and a bright air grabber with callout. But while this looks stock, the V8 is inhaling with a newer Holley four-barrel carburetor. It's part of a package that fires up easily and feels strong on the road. This is set up to let you feel the road like a proper 1960s classic. And it also means the four-speed that lets you tick through the gears and let the V8 sing.
Currently on a salvage title, a triple-black Cougar gives you a terrific balance of performance and panache. So no matter if your plans are full restomod or a new tires, this drop-top has serious potential and appeal. So dream big and take home this Mercury.
